Recognizing damaged Caulking
As caulking ages, cracks can form and these cracks can allow air, water and dirt to pass through the seal which could cause mold in the window frame, framing, or even the subfloor. This also applies to siding, most specifically the in and outside corners.
Missing Flashings and Kick Out Flashings
Flashings are thin pieces of metal used along joints and corners of a house to prevent the passage of water into a structure and can be used in a variety of places. Often, a home might benefit from the following types of Flashings: Base Flashing, Step Flashing, Valley Flashing, L Flashing, Drip Edges, and Foundation Flashing.

Kickout Flashing
Kickout flashing moves water away from an area where the roof connects to the siding. This flashing will “kickout” water into the gutter instead of it going under your shingles and behind your siding. Unfortunately, as this flashing is not part of building code, damage in this area is very common occurrence in South Dakota and most contractors and builders do not include it.
What Damage Looks Like
Damage on your siding from kickout flashing will look like some discoloration on you siding or possibly dirt. This color is coming from your siding rotting from behind. This can be easy to spot if you know what you are looking for - see the images below.

Leaky Gutters or missing Flashing?
One very common misconception about a gutter repair or a leaking gutter is that the gutters are fine, but a Kickout Flashing is needed. (shown in the photo here). This looks like the gutter may be leaking down or into the wall. But the gutters are working properly. Instead, a kickout flashing is needed. Please refer to our

Vinyl Siding Patches are used to cosmetically make holes in Vinyl Siding look better. They are not a complete solution but will stop some water better than a big hole in the siding. Vinyl Siding is not much of a protecter in the first place but more just an outside cover.
It is very common for vinyl siding to be discontinued, these patches can be used for paint to patch areas especially when there is no color available to match with small pieces of siding. This patch is a much better alternative than using a single piece of a close color. This patch is much easier and less time consuming and looks better in the long run.

- Step 2 - Pull out your tape measure and then take a few pictures of the concerning area. Top, bottom, left, right, close up, farther away…. It’s ok to send us 10 pictures! We’d like to understand the concerns you have visually. Including the tape measure showing the width or length of the concerning area will help us.
- Step 3 – Send the text! Please text Brady at: (605)415-9055.
- Step 4 – Look for an estimate from our Repair Experts within the next 24 hours.
Here’s an example:
